The Heart & The Tongue [CIY Move 2014: Day 3]

The Heart & The Tongue [CIY Move 2014: Day 3]

“My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires” (James 1:19-20 NIV)

“For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of” (Luke 6:45 NIV)

What is it that fills up your heart? Is it full of what Luke describes as “good things” that you have stored up in your heart, or do you find your heart overflowing with things that you know are not good? Today we were challenged to think about how our heart and tongue are connected, and how when our heart is sick, (spiritually speaking) our tongue can way out of control. Sometimes we get to a place where we are in such a destructive pattern that we don’t even fully realize how hurtful and damaging the words we speak, and the things we say (to and about) people really are. Some of us have wounded people deeply, and many of us walk around with scars, or still bear the weight of words said to us that have defined us and had power over us for way to long.

A very powerful element of our day involved students writing the most hurtful thing that has ever been said to them on one side of a piece of paper… on the other side they were to write the most hurtful thing that they had ever said to someone, or about someone. As we were challenged with the truth of the Word of God through the evening message (from the above passages), there came a point where those pieces of paper were collected and were thrown into the trash, but not before we were all challenged to take some time to do business with those we’ve offended. For some that meant a personal conversation with someone in the room…. For others it meant making a phone call, sending a text, or finding a way to seek out the person that they had wronged and apologizing… As the power of the Holy Spirit was at work in convicting, leading, challenging, and moving students, and as the notes they had written were being collected to be thrown away, each student was given a personal note of encouragement written by their leaders of affirmation and truth, spoken to them, and over them, about who God says that they are in His Word. It was a powerful time together of challenge, affirmation, letting-go, healing, and trusting the Lord in his leading to continue to restore, rescue, and use His people and their words in some pretty amazing ways.

CIY MOVE 2014

Something has to change. And yet, no matter how hard we try even our best efforts fall flat. But what if we’re missing the point? What if it’s not about trying? What if it’s about what’s already been done?

The resurrection changes everything.

It’s the power which flows from this cataclysmic event that aligns faith with deeds, establishes justice, unites enemies, speaks blessings, and seeks the lost. MOVE 2014 will examine the writings of James: the brother of the resurrected God. Students will discover that faith begins with the resurrection, and see that this changes everything.

We’ll be in Holland, Michigan this year staying at Hope College. With downtown a short walk from campus, attendees are able to enjoy the shops and cafes in the heart of Holland. A sandy beach on Lake Michigan waits just a 15-minute drive from campus, and the campus offers lots of green space and numerous recreation opportunities.

Total cost for the week for Chapel Rock students is $259 if you register by March 16th. After March 16th the cost increases to $299. A $50 deposit is due with your registration. The final deadline to register is Sunday April 13, 2014.

“Captivated” Movie Screening in The VINE

“Everywhere we go, we are surrounded by screens. Have we entered a Techno utopia or a virtual prison?” Producer and co-director, Phillip Telfer, asks this and other pertinent questions in the documentary “Captivated: Finding Freedom in a Media Captive Culture”.

Everyone would agree that we live in a media-saturated society, but how many consider the possibility that they have become captives? People of all ages are being held hostage by television, video games, social networks, movies, texting, tweeting, and more. They have become infatuated with the things of the world and distracted from God, from eternity, and from deeper relationships with each other.

We will be viewing Captivated: Finding Freedom in a Media Captive Culture Sunday at 9:15 during The VINE in the Family Life Center.  This viewing is for everyone so families can attend together.  Remember, we will be showing this film in the Family Life Center, you can enter through door 6 for easy access.

INVISIBLES: Week Two @ The VINE

Invisibles: Week Two @ The VINE

What would it be like if you woke up one morning knowing that you were going to be arrested? What if your reasoning for standing up to the authorities and powers rested upon fully taking up your cross and following Jesus wherever He leads? What if the place that He led you was into a homeless camp?

This coming weekend we’re continuing in week two of our Invisibles series. We’ll be having a couple of special guests that will be helping us come to understand more about a challenge our city faces that has been on our minds a lot recently. Many of you followed the news stories about those caught in homelessness who were removed from the Davidson Street bridge this past Tuesday. Of those arrested and removed one was a friend of ours named Maurice. Some of you may have previously had the opportunity to meet Maurice at the the Superbowl party for the homeless this past February. Maurice along with Ed Wilkes (Nick’s dad), will be with us to share in a panel conversation format about the challenges that we face together as brothers and sisters in Christ as we walk with those in homelessness. We’ll be looking at a challenge that is as present in the streets of Indianapolis as it is in the halls of Ben Davis High School where the statistic has been as high as 1 in 30 students have been or are currently experience the challenge of being homeless (according to Restoring Lives West http://www.restoringliveswest.org).

If you haven’t had an opportunity to catch any of the news stories you can view the WISHTV piece here: http://www.wishtv.com/news/local/five-arrested-at-homeless-tent-city

Also, there’s a trailer from an upcoming feature length documentary that features some of the footage from this past week’s events that you can see here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfQStBoV-xE

We’re looking forward to the dialogue ahead as we seek to be the people God has called us to be in our schools and in our city. Middle school and high school students and their parents are invited to Join us at Chapel Rock for The VINE this Sunday in the chapel at 9:15 AM.

Senior Trip: Day One

Badlands

It’s been a little over 24 hours since we hit the road in Indy. The bus has been running great and we haven’t had to change a tire yet! We had a great evening meal with Mike Beam and his friend Katie at Bob’s Your Uncle Pizza in Iowa City, IA last night. A weary night of driving was rewarded by a prairie sunrise bursting across the South Dakota plains and lighting up the terrain before us, beckoning for exploration. After a breakfast stop at Wall Drug in Wall, SD, we were off to begin our adventure…

This afternoon we commenced our exploration of the Badlands National Park. It has been a journey that has taken us down crevasses, across jagged peaks, through wandering valleys, sliding down hills, and enjoying every moment. You can check out many of today’s photo highlights at: http://www.instagram.com/chapelrockym

The Badlands are hard to take in. There’s beauty in the arid desolation wherever you look. From rainbow painted hills, to erosion carved mountains… the scale, the detail, the depth, and the wonder of it all are amazing. There have been so many awe inspiring moments that keep us on the edge of our seats in eager expectation of what’s around the next corner. Our spiritual journey is taking us through the life of Christ and all that he experienced in the wilderness. We look forward to trusting Him in all that’s ahead.
